Bugün geldiğimiz noktada ise yalnızca ölçmeyi değil, ölçemediğimizi nasıl ölçebiliriz sorusunu sormaktayız. Modern bilimde özellikle sağlık alanında bireylerin algılarını, tutumlarını, duygularını ve kabullerini anlamaya yönelik araştırmalar giderek artmaktadır. Sayamayacağımız, tartamayacağımız ya da doğrudan gözlemleyemeyeceğimiz bu soyut özelliklerin değerlendirilmesinde ölçekler, tüm sınırlılıklarına rağmen en güçlü araçlarımızdan biri haline gelmiştir. Bu kitabın yazım süreci de tam bu noktada doğdu: Bizler, sağlık alanında çalışan araştırmacılar olarak ölçek geliştirme sürecinde çok sayıda soru ve zorluk ile karşılaştık. Var olan kapsamlı literatüre rağmen, özellikle uygulamaya dönük adımlarda cevap bulmakta ve süreci başlatmakta zaman zaman zorlandık. Bu deneyim, bizi, kendi yaşadığımız güçlükleri başkalarının daha kolay aşabilmesine katkı sunacak bir rehber hazırlamaya yöneltti. Elinizdeki bu kitap, özellikle ölçek geliştirmeye yeni başlayan araştırmacılar için hem teorik bilgiyi hem de uygulama adımlarını bir araya getiren, kolay anlaşılır ve sistemli bir kaynak olarak tasarlandı. Kitapta; ölçek nedir sorusundan başlayarak, ihtiyaç belirleme, madde yazımı, pilot uygulama, açıklayıcı ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizleri, kesme noktalarının belirlenmesi gibi temel adımlar detaylı biçimde ele alınmaktadır. Kitabın en dikkat çekici özelliği, uygulama adımlarının bilgisayar programı ekran görüntüleriyle desteklenmiş olmasıdır. Bu yönüyle kitap, yalnızca ne yapılması gerektiğini anlatmakla kalmaz, nasıl yapılacağını da gösterir. Böylece okuyucular, öğrendikleri bilgileri doğrudan uygulamaya geçirebilirler.
