Drama Editorial Review
"Something the Lord Made" is a must-watch movie, especially for those who are interested in the history of medicine and heart surgery. The movie, starring Mos Def as Vivien Thomas, tells the incredible true story of the cardiac pioneer's journey and his long-time collaboration with Dr. Blalock, played by Alan Rickman. The movie starts with Vivien Thomas, an African-American carpenter, who despite having no formal education in medicine, becomes a skilled surgical assistant under Dr. Blalock's guidance. Together, they achieve numerous groundbreaking and life-saving procedures, including the revolutionary "Blue Baby" surgery. Through the nuanced performances of the lead actors, the film brings to life the complex and often tumultuous race relations that existed at the time. The movie also addresses topics such as the struggle for recognition and authenticity for Thomas's contributions, making the film an engaging and compelling watch. Overall, Something the Lord Made is a stunning tribute to the tenacity of two men who worked together, disregarding race and class, to achieve something significant.
