Action & Adventure Editorial Review

**** "Brick," directed by Rian Johnson, is hailed as a modern classic, delivering a unique blend of high school drama and noir detective storytelling. As his directorial debut, Johnson demonstrates a mastery of storytelling and character development that is often underestimated. The film is set against the backdrop of a seemingly deserted high school in Orange County but features a gripping murder mystery that warrants attention. Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads the ensemble cast with a ferociously intense performance that captures the audience's attention alongside a strong supporting cast, which includes notable actors like Lukas Haas and Richard Roundtree. The film’s screenplay is praised for its sharp dialogue and clever use of noir slang, though some viewers note that the high school setting feels somewhat implausible due to its stark isolation. However, these minor critiques do not overshadow the overall entertainment value. Viewers commend "Brick" for its striking visual style, comparable to high-budget productions, alongside a hauntingly beautiful score by Nathan Johnson that enhances the film’s atmosphere. This Special Edition Blu-ray, offering a 4K transfer approved by Johnson, is described as essential for any fan of his work. It boasts additional content akin to Criterion Collection releases, making it a valuable asset for film enthusiasts. While some extras received mixed reviews, the availability of English subtitles is seen as a significant advantage for grasping the film’s intricate slang. Overall, "Brick" is recognized as an innovative piece of cinema that successfully merges a classic genre with contemporary storytelling, appealing to both mystery lovers and those new to the film. **
